The fourth day dawned bright and sunny, a lovely day for a hike. Except for our boots, we'd pretty much dried out during the night before, so we were in good spirits as we left Motarua hut. We had an easy 4 mile hike to Rainbow Reach, where we could pick up the bus, with the promise of some nice views at the Wetland Viewing Platform. (Click on any picture for a larger image.) |
There was a nice sunrise on the final day of the hike. This is Lake Manapouri, which was just steps from Motarua Hut.
This was a shot taken from the viewing platform.
The walk out to the bus stop skirted a lake. We weren't out of sight of water for long on the last day. Fortunately, it was in the lakes and rivers where it belonged, and not on the trail. This is the river which connects Lake Manapouri (at the hut) to the late in Te Anau, the nearest town, and where we stayed for several days. |

Another lovely view on a lovely day.
Here we are at the end of the trail with the "Kepler Track" sign at our back. We were a group of very happy campers. We're waiting here for the 10:00 bus, due to arrive shortly. Bob's pack is standing in for him on the right, next to my left hand. |
|
Well, actually, this wasn't the end of the trail. There was a bus pick up here, and the four of us were taking it back to town. Before the bus arrived, Bob took the running shoes out of his pack and gave me the pack. When we got on the bus, he started the 6 mile run back to the starting point. |
|
It was a nice run out to the end. While Bob was enjoying his run, I was enjoying a hot shower and clean clothes at the motel.
And here's the real end, which was also where we started. It looked a little different on this day than when we began the hike. Once he reached the end, Bob then ran a few more miles back to the motel, where he, too, finally enjoyed a shower and clean clothes. |
